USE CASE — INCOMING GOODS QUALITY INSPECTION - EXTENDED
The Challenge
Ripeness is the single most important quality attribute for the taste of tropical fruit — and the hardest to assess consistently at goods receipt.
Traditional incoming inspection relies on destructive sweetness measurements: a small sample is cut open, only one or two parameters are tested, the remains are discarded. The result is a single data point from a handful of fruits, taken once, by one inspector.
This approach has three structural weaknesses:
- It destroys product to generate data.
- It typically measures only one parameter — sweetness or firmness — when ripeness is much more complex.
- It produces no trend data. A single snapshot cannot detect gradual shifts in quality across a sourcing season or a supplier change.
The newQC Approach
newQC replaces single-parameter destructive spot-checks with multi-parameter non-destructive scanning.
Each incoming pallet is measured using a portable NIR scanner. Results are captured digitally and stored against the shipment record — creating a quality data trail that accumulates over time.

FRESHANALYTICS RESEARCH PROJECT — BMWi FÖRDERPROGRAMM “SMARTE DATENWIRTSCHAFT”
The newQC scanner was deployed in daily operational use at REWE’s Langel distribution centre from June to August 2021, as part of the publicly funded FreshAnalytics research consortium (Förderkennzeichen 01MD19009A-F), led by tsenso GmbH.

The 10% of destructive tests retained were applied precisely where scanner data flagged potential non-conformance — producing legally defensible rejection evidence where it was needed. The scanner determines where accredited testing is applied, not whether it is required.
What the Data Revealed: An Early-Season Sourcing Correction
During the validation period, weekly review of accumulated scanner data identified a consistent pattern: early-season Brazilian-origin mangos were showing underperforming ripeness indices across multiple consecutive deliveries.
This trend was not visible through conventional spot-check inspection. Individual shipments passed standard incoming checks. Only the accumulated scan data — reviewed in the context of the full season’s trend — made the pattern detectable.
The finding was raised with the retail QC team in a regular data review meeting. A sourcing correction followed: ordering was adjusted before the underperforming lots could accumulate on the shelf.
